MEP refer to Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing

Civil engineering gives shape to building but MEP engineering brings facilities in building so that human can live a comfortable life.

 Everything inside a building which makes it safe and comfortable to be incomes under the title building services.

HVAC – HEATING VENTILATION & AIR CONDITIONING

Heating

As name suggest its main purpose is to generate heat which can be achieved by various equipment like heater, boiler, furnace or heat pump to heat water, steam or air in a central location such as a furnace room in a home or a mechanical room in large building.

Ventilation

It is a process in which air is replaced or exchanged for a particular area to control moisture, odours, smoke, heat, dust airborne bacteria, carbon-di-oxide and maintaining oxygen level.

It has two types first one is natural ventilation in which air is exchanged naturally and the second one has forced Ventilation in which air is exchanged forcefully by means of fans.

Ex. Kitchens exhaust, Basement (car park) exhaust.

Air Conditioning

 It is the process of maintaining thermal condition, indoor air quality, humidity remove anti-micro-organism, dust, soot and foreign particle from a particular area for human comfort.

Fire Fighting Service

It is a technique which used different type of equipment to extinguish the fire and limit the damaged caused by it.

It used a large fire tank, pumping system, pining network with the sprinkler.

Types of Fire and reason for it

Fire-Water Reservoir

Pumping System

The pumping system is used to pump water from the fire tank to building through fire pipe.

In the pumping system, a different type of pump used based on their application.

Diesel pump is used in case of fire.

Sprinkler and hydrant pump are mostly electrically driven.

Booster and Jockey pump are used to maintain the required pressure level.

A dedicated PLC types penal used to monitor all the pump. When penal sense pressure drop in pipe system automatically jockey pump gets activated.

And when jockey pump not able to fill that drop automatically electrical pump supplies water t piping network.

Diesel pump starts in case of fire because most of the time electrical supply gets stopped during a fire.

Fire Hydrant system

It consists of a piping network directly connected to water supply main to provide water to each and every hydrant outlet and is intended to provide water to fireman to fight the fire.

Fire Protection equipment

Apart from pumping system, fire extinguisher used to reduce the fire.

In a market different type of extinguisher available for a different type of fire.

Plumbing is a system that consist different type of pipe ,valve and fixture to convey water to building and remove waste water from building.

ELV - EXTRA LOW VOLTAGE SYSTEMS

If we don't use ELV system then also building will run without any issues,

But we use this system to enhance the safety of building and human being, energy saving.

Fire detection system

A fire the alarm system is the number of devices working together to detect and warn people through visual and audio appliances when smoke, fire, carbon monoxide or other emergencies are present. these alarms may be activated from smoke detectors, and heat detectors

A Public address system (PA System) is an electronic sound amplification and distribution a system with a microphone, amplifier and loudspeakers, used to allow a person to address a large public, for example for announcements of movements at large and noisy air and rail terminals or at a sports stadium.

Access control system

in the fields of physical security and information security, access control is the selective restriction of access to a place or other resource

access control refers to security features that control who can access resources in the operating system. applications call access control functions to set who can access specific resources or control access to resources provided by the application

Cctv and Security system

Closed-circuit television (CCTV), also known as video surveillance, is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors

In industrial plants, CCTV equipment may be used to observe parts of a process from a central control room, for example when the environment is not suitable for humans.

Cctv systems may operate continuously or only as required to monitor a particular event.

BMS System

•        A Building Management System (BMS) or Building Automation System (BAS) is a computer-based control system installed in buildings that control and monitors the building’s mechanical and electrical equipment

•        They help you plan operations and assess performance; make operation easier; improve building comfort, enhance safety, improve efficiency, save energy and protect your assets.

•        Their function is to control, monitor and optimize building services, such as heating, ventilation, air conditioning, lighting, alarm systems and certain electrical appliances.

Conclusion

MEP is most important part of the construction industry, without MEP building will be incomplete.  We know the industry is civil dominated, but the time has come to give importance to MEP.
